Lizzie’s one mile daily challenge raises funds for the Community Brain Injury Service
The Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) Community Brain Injury Service gratefully acknowledges an incredible donation of £3,465 from the Keys Family from Derry.
Katie Keys was involved in a motorcycle accident on 13 July 2020 and was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Her sister Lizzie set herself a challenge of running one mile daily from 1st January 2020 until 13th July 2020 – to mark one year since the accident to raise funds for the Community Brain Injury Service.
Lizzie commented: “The money raised is in aid of the Community Brain Injury Team in Derry which has been vital in Katie’s return to normal life. They have been working with Katie and will continue to do so for as long as is necessary. Through the help of this Team’s occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social worker and a clinical psychologist, Katie is getting used to normal life again. They helped her get back to work and adapted her workplace so that it suits her current needs. They also helped her get back to driving and return to independent living.”
Lizzie continued: “I am hoping the money raised can provide resources and equipment for the Community Brain Injury Team so that other families can also benefit from their fantastic provision, in the same way as we are still benefiting from their incredible support.”
Dr Shane McCarney, Consultant Clinical Lead for the Community Brian Injury Service, said: “The Community Brain Injury Service would like to say a massive thank you to Lizzie for her fundraising efforts and setting this innovative challenge in recognition of the support provided from our Service to her sister Katie. We are delighted that Katie is making such wonderful progress and we wish her well in the future.”
